Twinning

Twinning….defined as: Trending in our little twin world………TWINNING 🙂

Been cray cray around here. As usual Anne and I have been busy with work, chores, work, exercising, chores, work….see a pattern here? So basically, what has been Twinning in our little world?? Hmm, well….

The weather has been crazy for June. It has only been in the high 70’s low 80’s during the day and at night, in the 50’s and 60’s! We haven’t even turned on our air yet! Now, it has been toasty at times but we are cheapies…so we just suck it up and deal with it. Every day it has been raining summer showers. The horses love it!

I met with a sports medicine doctor last week and he told me I had bursitis in my hip. I am not shocked. So I am off three weeks from running. I know my hips are weak, you would think years and years of riding horses would make them strong…apparently not. So I am doing a lot of stretching and having a BLAST on the elliptical….enter sarcasm HERE.

At least Ice Cube helps get me thru on the elliptical!

After my doctors appointment Anne and I went shopping and I bought this Under Armour visor just because…well….me loved it! I have a teeny head and this still fits me. I was shocked and so happy!

Mine is green and pink but the same style.

I had my first Quest Protein bar this past weekend. I normally don’t eat any type of protein bars but thought I would give them a try. I actually broiled it in the oven for 4 minutes so it was like a big protein cookie. Not too shabby. However, I watched Anne pick at hers for about 2.3 seconds and then look at me and say “Do we have any chocolate covered raisins?” She wasn’t a fan. I didn’t think it was the best thing in the world but in a pinch, I would certainly eat another one.

I love this quote. This year has been a very strange one for me and Anne. Lots of changes in our lives and it is hard to adjust sometimes. However, change brings growth, right? SO BRING IT ON! I can certainly say that I have changed a lot this year and I have enjoyed those changes!

Me and My Fan

My Childhood Friend. HA!

My Childhood Friend. HA!

When I was a little girl, Anne and I would lay blankets down on the floor in our bedroom and lay in front of a box fan. I could nap forever with my face in front of a fan. Growing up in the south, when we were little there was no air conditioning and so of course fans were every where. At night, with all the windows open and the box fans running it became some sort of a lullaby to sleep to. I love the sound of a fan. I love the cool air blowing on my face.  At my grandmother’s house, you knew it was summer when she would drag the huge attic fan out and put in up on concrete blocks in front of a bedroom window to blow air through the house. I loved that fan. I can still feel that cool breeze flowing through the back staircase of that house. It was the coolest spot in the house on those hot 95 degree days. I can still remember coming home from long weeks of being at camps during the summer. We would both go upstairs and lay on the bed and crash. We would sleep for hours and hours in front of that big fan. I don’t know what is was, it was just so soothing. Later, when I went to college, my father moved Anne and I in to our dorm rooms. Before he left he asked if we had everything we needed and we both said “Oh my, we need to go buy a fan!!!”  I remember him muttering something and rolling his eyes, but he took us  to WalMart and we each got a fan. I slept every single night with that fan on. It didn’t matter if it was 30 below outside I had that fan running. There were times when I thought my nose may suffer from frostbite and fall off but it was never an option to turn the fan OFF. When I left college and moved in with a bunch of roommates in a big ole house downtown Lexington, I had two fans in my room. My roommate said it sounded like an airport hanger in my bedroom. heehee!  Later on Anne and I rented a house together, here came my fan! Her’s too. I woke up one night to my fan not running. I messed with it forever and it was clear that my fan had burn up…it was no longer..it had clearly had enough. I woke Anne up in the middle of the night and told her I was going to WalMart to buy a new fan. ha! I still have a fan in my bedroom. It is strange, cause I certainly don’t need one to sleep. I don’t travel with a fan. I don’t haul one around with me when I go on vacation, it doesn’t bother me to not have one, but given the option…I want my fan, damnit! It really is a feeling of my childhood that I think I will always carry with me. It reminds me of life being simple, of life being still, of a quieter time. It reminds me of being worn out from playing to hard as a kid and taking long naps laying in front of one. It reminds me of the quietness of that ole plantation style house I grew up in. So basically, it has been a constant in my life since I was a munchkin and now on the backside of 30….it still is. I think it always will be.

Polo Fields and Bandi Headbands

Hola!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a fantastic Mother’s Day! Anne and I spent all day Saturday with our Momma and it was great. Even though my Mom is only about a 35 min drive from the farm we don’t see her as much as we would like. We do both talk to her every day but as they say “Life gets busy” and sometimes are visits are less frequent! Something we need to work on. Yesterday Anne and I headed out to our favorite place to run and got in a couple of miles and then did some sprints on the Polo fields.

Running around the Polo Field

Running around the Polo Field

I love running on the polo fields just because I have so many good memories of riding out there. Lots of fun times with friends! Every time we run the fields I think of all those wonderful times of laughing, riding some very talented horses and drinking beer. 🙂

One thing I am loving right now is my Bandi Headbands. I was actually at the Rolex 3 Day Event walking thru the tradeshow and stumbled upon them. They had a booth and I bought three. I have tried to run in headbands before and my head is so little they never work. They are always slipping off mid run and pissing me off so I had really given up on the entire headband dealio.

Anne and Me sporting our Bandi Bands

However, I bought the Bandi Headbands  and decided to give them a try. I LOVE THEM! They never move or slip and I have a pea head. I mean seriously, my noggin is teeny..so the fact that they don’t move and are super secure sold me immediately. I actually loaded hay with one on a couple of weeks ago. Never moved…Love it!

Running and Stacking Hay!

They also have a pocked on the back of them that fits my chapstick PERFECTLY! I love that because on longer runs, I always wish I had my chapstick with me.  Plus….they are fashionable. I love how cute they are and all the awesome colors and patterns they come in. I am sold on the Bandi Bands! I highly recommend them. 🙂

Do you run in headbands? If so, which ones do you like?

Happy Mother’s Day!

To My Wonderful Mom on Mother’s Day!

You are the BEST Mother in the World! You always took the time to bake us the best cakes on our birthdays. Always the one behind the camera, planning the parties and buying the gifts.

TwinBirthday1

You had no issue with fashion at all. You weren’t scared to dress us like a pilgrim for an every day outing. You were never scared to think outside of the box.

TwinPilgrams1

You taught us how to fish and love the outdoors. There was never a dull moment in our childhood! You raised us on a farm, taught us to entertain ourselves, encouraged us to be our own people and to never back down from a dream.

TwinFishing1

Speaking of a dream. We had a a dream of owning monkey puppets. We hounded you and Dad for months, we put that “never back down from a dream” in to full force and we won! Thank you for teaching us that lesson, it paid off. Also, thank you for teaching us to share…here is proof that that lesson was learned. We are sharing our most prized possessions with our cousins.

TwinMonkeys1

Mom, Seriously…..Thank you for the life lessons! Thank you for always being there! Thank you for being the encouragement that we always need and the voice of reason when that is needed as well. Thank you for being the best mom EVER!

I love you to the Moon and Back!

PRO Compression Love

This past week Anne and I headed to our favorite spot to run to get in a workout. We call it our playground because there are so many different routes to run, we don’t have to deal with traffic and the views…well the views………they are so awesome!

Incredible Views

Incredible Views

This particular day we decided to do some mile repeats. We ran a mile, then did the steps at the stadium, then ran a faster mile, then more steps, then another fast mile. It was a blast and one of those workouts were I felt really strong. You know like “uh, I GOT THIS!” When you get done you felt like you really did something and you are bouncing off the walls? Yes, that kind of workout! Me loves! It felt awesome.

Anne running stairs

Anne running stairs

It felt so awesome that I was convinced that I deserved several beers that evening so I went over to my friend Nikki’s house and drank them. 😉

Saturday I couldn’t walk.

HA! Not really but I was super sore. Fortunately, I had just got a pair of PRO Compression Sleeves in the mail and I put them on when I got up on Saturday. I have several pairs of their socks, but honestly I feel claustrophobic in them in warm weather. Not as bad in the winter, but in the summer when it is hot out I just can’t wear the socks. My feet feel like they can’t breath. However, I LOVE the compression sleeves! I threw them on, some shorts and flip flops and wore them all day. My calves were still sore that afternoon but after I went and rode my horses, they loosened up.

Love

Love

I actually kept them on when I rode. I have worn the socks a lot in the winter when I have been riding or on my feet all weekend at barrel races. I am a firm believer in compression and now the horse industry has compression too. Can you believe that? They do! They have full compression suits now. You can see them here. I haven’t gotten as far as to squeeze Wheels in to a compression suit but don’t put it past me. heehee!

Wheels says "Mom, I would look funny in a compression suit"

Wheels says “Mom, I would look funny in a compression suit”

Anywho, moral of the story. Get some compression sleeves. Do it. Go do it right now.

So tell me, do you already use compression socks/sleeves? If so, why and what brand? I wear PRO Compression.

Book Review: The Drunk Diet: How I lost 40 Pounds…Wasted by Luc Carl

Hello Rain……..it is clearly Spring. It has rained 3-4 inches in the past two days here in the Bluegrass. I am over it. This past weekend the weather was amazing! I loved every second of it and now it has done nothing but rain, rain, rain. So in honor of this crappy weather I have read…a lot. Actually I read the book The Drunk Diet: How I lost 40 Pounds…Wasted by Luc Carl.

luccarl

Here is a brief description:

This is the story of how one chain-smoking, cheeseburger-eating, hard-partying Rock ‘N Roller—a self-proclaimed “out-of-shape, bloated asshole”—grew into an avid runner and cyclist and, ultimately, a happier version of himself. He will be the first to tell you: If he could do it, so can you

My sister had picked this book up a while back and read it,  so I grabbed it this week and thought it would be a fun book to read. I was right! I really enjoyed it. I love reading fitness and nutrition books  and I like my beer  so this book fit me great. HA! Actually, I loved reading about his struggle with the party scene vs the fitness scene. I can certainly understand that struggle. When I did a couple of triathlons years back, I was still drinking quite a bit, closing down some local bars and loving being in my 20’s! I certainly wasn’t ready to turn over the leaf to “all health, all the time” I was more of the “lets go bike 30 miles, then go drink a bucket of beer at my favorite bar” kind of gal. Ok, I lie.. I was more of the “Oh, you would rather skip the biking and go straight to the bar?? Works for me!” kinda gal.  Of course as I have gotten older that has slowed down tremendously. I no longer want to be out drinking till all hours of the night, I no longer care to spend my money paying the light bill at a bar because I am in there three to four nights a week. Those days are over. I am too old, I seriously can’t hang and I have no desire too. So I thought this book was great. It really showed Luc’s transformation and how he made a new life for himself with out giving up his old self entirely. Balance can be tough and especially in a world of fitness and partying. I would recommend this book, cause it is truthful, funny and a good read!* After I finished it, I headed out to run some stairs….hell, the book motivated me!

LeighRunningStairs1

*Disclaimer: If cussing bothers you, don’t read this book. I can have a mouth like a sailor so I loved it. 🙂

Have a great week!

Paleo Nachos

The dogwoods are in bloom. The grass is green, green, green. Horse hair is flying all over the farm. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Spring! Isn’t it amazing how motivating good weather can be? I love being on the farm in the Spring. It is so full of life!

Our Farm this Spring

Our Farm this Spring

My runs have been amazeballs since the weather changed. My horses? Oh my sweet, sweet frisky horses. They feel amazing and are coming back from their winter break much faster than I thought they would. Life is good! I have been writing out some summer goals for myself. I am so goal oriented and love having things to work towards. I plan on running some longer races this summer and fall which really excites me. Anne and I want to do some group runs this summer too. We always just run with each other and we need to meet some people that like running and working out!  I am still totally focused on living Paleo and know for me, it is the only way to feel 100% healthy. Speaking of Paleo………..how about some Paleo Nachos? Uh ME LOVES! I could eat this every night. I really enjoy making this because it is fast and easy. Like I said before when the days get longer and I am able to cram so much in to them, I need quick and easy when it comes to dinner. I hate taking the time to  cook when I can be outside riding, running or mowing. Mowing…yes, that takes a lot of time! Anne and I made these last night, I highly recommend them!

Make these...you will love them...I promise!

Make these…you will love them…I promise!

Paleo Nachos

Sweet Potato Chips (we use the TERRA chips but you can make your own if you want)
Grassfed Ground Beef (while cooking, I season cumin, garlic and pepper on it
Tomato choppedgreen chilies diced
diced white onion
guacamole
Jalapeno
Salsa Verde
So basically, throw a handful of chips on a plate, cover it when grassfed beef, throw onion, tomatoes, green chilies, jalapenos and guacamole on it. Pour some salsa on top and TAA DAA! Awesome Nachos! The juice from the meat will soak in to the chips…OMG….you’re welcome. 🙂

Books and Pavement

Hello All! It’s the middle of April and there is snow on the ground here in the lovely Bluegrass. This past weekend I got a ton of sun, today, I am in a turtleneck. BLECH! Make up your mind Mother Nature…Woman…….GET IT TOGETHER!

Great book!

Great book!

I have been reading a lot lately. I so love to read but it goes in phases. At times I go nowhere without a book in my hand, other times it never crosses my mind. I have to actually read a BOOK, not a Kindle, nook or any other electronic reader (I have a friend that reads books on her iphone. WHAT? Seriously, my head would fall off!). I love a book in my hand. Remember Carrie in the first SATC movie (uh the best one, the second one…not good, not good at all) talking about the smell of library books. I feel ya Carrie..I really do. For the last couple of nights I have stayed up late reading Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. Anyone read it? Anne read it first and said she loved it and for me to read it. I picked it up and was hooked from the beginning. A girlfriend of mine read it the same time Anne did. She chatted me last week and said “Leigh, do books make you cry? Do you get emotional over books?” I said “YES!” She said “Well GET READY THEN!” So I knew this one was not going to be this big fairy tale happy ending type book where everything works out and everyone is a happy camper. I was right and I think that is why I loved it. This book is about a quadriplegic and his caretaker and it is real, heartbreaking and funny all rolled in to one. I give it four out of five horseshoes. So basically…..I loved it and I recommend it. 🙂

Relaxing after a run this weekend!

Relaxing after a run this weekend!

Lets see, what else? Anne and I have been running a lot. I have hit a new wave with my running. I am actually really enjoying it. I have always liked running but I feel like I am better at it right now for some reason.  I got some good advice the other day. It was really simple too. “Leigh, just go run, don’t worry about distance and time, just run.” I guess it never occurred to me to do that. I am such a goal setter, I need a goal people! I need to know that I accomplished it, to mark it off the list, then to set another one. However, not setting a goal and just hitting the pavement, yapping with Anne and enjoying the scenery…it is really working for me. Who knew, right?

Ok, that is enough for now! I will check in again soon!
